[TW: SUICIDE]
For Matt, the Lift the Load Challenge represents something deeply personal. Behind the vest are years of lived experience, loss, and a drive to change the culture around men’s mental health.
In his younger years, Matt struggled with anger and bottled-up emotions. Like many men, he felt the pressure of stigma – the expectation to stay silent and to “tough it out”. But that silence proved devastating. In 2009, Matt lost a close friend to suicide, an event that has stayed with him every day since.
“I lost a very close friend of mine to suicide. One conversation could have changed everything. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think about him.”
The loss shaped not only his outlook but also the legacy he wanted to build. Matt named his youngest daughter in part after his late friend, a daily reminder of his mate Aleks. It also inspired him to create Pack Apparel – a brand centred on the idea of strength in community and the “pack mentality” of looking out for one another.
When he first discovered Lift the Load, it immediately resonated. The symbolism of the 10kg vest mirrored the invisible burdens so many men carry in silence. Last year, he joined the challenge for the first time, walking alongside a close friend to raise awareness and funds for Top Blokes. The experience left a lasting impression, not just on Matt but on the people he inspired to open up.
“People aren’t willing to talk about their own mental health, for the fear of looking weak… it’s not weak, if anything, one of the hardest things to do is to open up and talk to someone.”
This year, he’s back. For Matt, walking with weight is about more than raising money – it’s about sparking conversations. He believes that when men see someone willing to be vulnerable, they’re more likely to open up themselves.
Sign up for Lift the Load and walk in solidarity for Men’s Mental Health this October!
