[TW: SUICIDE]
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a day to shine a light on the lives lost, the battles fought in silence, and the hope that every conversation can save a life. Suicide affects too many young people in Australia, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can change the narrative.
For Lucy, a Top Blokes Youth Worker, this day carries deep personal meaning.
“When I was 16 a good mate of mine took his own life. It really cemented into me how severe of a consequence not speaking out can be.”
As a teenager, Lucy lost a close friend to suicide. This experience shaped her journey with mental health and inspired her career in supporting young men through Top Blokes. Today, she uses her story to create open, safe spaces where difficult conversations about mental health and suicide can happen.
“Sometimes I see my friend in the young men I work with. I’m grateful I can start those conversations with them… perhaps even just plant the seed.”
As well as her vital work with Top Blokes, Lucy is also taking part in the Lift the Load Challenge. The weighted vest she carries is more than a physical test – it’s a symbol of the invisible burdens many young people carry around, and a call to the community to share that load.
If you’re struggling, you’re not alone – support is available through Lifeline 13 11 14, Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636, or Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467.
