What actually makes a great mentor?

Our Youth Ambassador Council recently reflected on what makes the difference, and it all comes down to connection. A great mentor is someone who meets you where you’re at and respects you enough to be real.

When you get that match right, it changes the whole game. Having that steady support gives you the confidence to find your own direction and the space to figure out who you want to be.

For a long time, masculinity was defined as being tough, staying quiet, and handling everything on your own.

But after the program, Tristan felt closer to his mates. The connections were stronger. The conversations were real. He knew he could open up about anything – and nothing about who he is changed because of it.

Connection changes everything.

Over the course of the program, we’ve watched boys open up in ways they hadn’t before – not because they were told what to do, but because they felt safe. When there’s a real connection with the mentors delivering the program, the walls come down and the learning can actually begin.

Because for any growth to happen, connection has to come first. Always.
