Level Up: Support a Mate

helping young men back their mates with confidence

Level Up: Support a Mate is a practical workshop designed for boys who have completed a Top Blokes mentoring program. It builds on what young men have already learned through the Top Blokes mentoring journey and gives them simple, real-world tools to check in on a mate who might be struggling.

Using the ALEC framework – Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, Check In – the workshop helps participants recognise warning signs, start supportive conversations, and understand when and how to connect a mate with extra support.

This is about giving young men the confidence to show up, speak up, and remind each other they are not alone.

Built for Top Blokes

Level Up is a series of workshops created for young men who have completed a Top Blokes program and want to keep building their skills, confidence and leadership.

Support a Mate extends the mental health learning from the 14–17 program with hands-on, scenario-based practice that helps young men respond when someone in their world is doing it tough.

Delivered by qualified Youth Workers, this free workshop for schools already running a Top Blokes mentoring program creates a safe space for honest conversations, practical learning and stronger peer support.

Why it matters?

Young men are often taught to keep things to themselves, push through, or avoid hard conversations. But when a mate is struggling, knowing how to check in can make a real difference.

Support a Mate helps young men move past awkwardness and into action. It shows them that they do not need to have all the answers to be a good mate — they just need the confidence to notice, ask, listen and help connect someone with support.

This workshop strengthens mental health awareness, challenges stigma, and helps build communities where young men know how to back themselves and each other.
