Why getting on the water might be the best way to check in on your mates.
At Top Blokes, we see firsthand what happens when young men have the space to open up.
Confidence grows.
Connections get stronger.
And no one feels like they’re doing it alone.
But those conversations don’t always come easy.
Most of the time, they don’t happen sitting across from someone.
They happen side by side — when the pressure’s off.
Out on the water, for example.
You’re side by side, not face to face. There’s no pressure to say the right thing. No awkward silence to fill. Just time, space and a mate next to you. And more often than not, that’s when the conversation starts.
A simple question. A quick check-in. A yarn that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
And for a lot of young men, those moments matter more than we realise.
Across Australia, 1 in 4 young men experience social isolation — the highest rate of any group. You can be surrounded by mates and still feel completely alone. It’s not always about having people around. It’s about not having the space, or the words, to open up.
That’s where the Reel Talk Fishing Challenge comes in.
This June, people across Australia will be getting out on the water — from beaches to rivers to local fishing spots — and doing something simple with a bit more purpose. The idea is straightforward: set a goal for how many hours you want to fish across the month, bring your mates along, and raise funds to support young men through the Top Blokes Foundation.
It’s a fishing challenge, but it’s also more than that.
It’s about making time.
It’s about checking in.
It’s about showing up.
You don’t need to be an expert angler. You don’t need a boat or a big plan. Whether it’s a quick session before work, a weekend trip, or just an hour down at your local spot — it all counts. Each week, you’re given conversation cards and prompts to help spark connection, openness and safety.
The conversations that come with it.

Because when those conversations happen, they open the door to something bigger.
The funds raised through the Reel Talk Fishing Challenge help more young men access programs that give them the tools to communicate openly, handle pressure and look out for their mates. Programs that create safe spaces where young blokes can connect, build trust and realise they’re not the only ones going through stuff.
That’s the real impact behind it.
Real Impact. Big Rewards

Stay actively fundraising throughout June to go in the draw to win Australia’s Number 1 Fishing Drone – the Aeroo Pro. Valued at $1,299 RRP, we’re giving away one drone every single week in June!
The Reel Talk Fishing Challenge runs across June, alongside Men’s Health Week, making it a chance to do something that’s not only good for you, but meaningful for others too.
Fishing has always been about more than just catching fish. It’s about slowing down, getting outdoors and spending time with your mates.
Reel Talk just gives that time a bit more purpose.
So if you’re looking for a reason to get out on the water this June, this might be it.
Grab your mates.
Hit the water.
Make it count.
Join the Reel Talk Fishing Challenge and be part of something that’s helping young men feel more connected, supported and less alone. In partnership with Daiwa Australia, helping make every moment on the water count.
